Photosynthesis

Plants flourish in the dark.

At night, I stand beside roadside trees in the city, letting my 8×10 camera remain open for minutes at a time. What cannot be seen by the eye—air, time, trembling, energy—emerges only on film. Leaves waver, distort, and re-form themselves, asserting a vitality that never pauses.

The act of photographing reveals the essential acts of plants.

Photosynthesis breaks down water with light and creates sugar through heat and carbon dioxide. When light touches a leaf, an invisible reaction takes place.

When light touches film, another reaction occurs:

a latent image forms, and through heat and chemicals it becomes visible.

Photography is, in essence, a kind of photosynthesis.

Light enters a dark chamber, meets a receptive surface, and generates an image—

a transcription of life itself.

These photographs, made in darkness with moonlight, streetlamps, and neon, are not simply urban nightscapes. They are records of an encounter: the life force of trees inscribing itself onto film. In the city’s sleepless glow, plants perform their silent rituals. Photography merely listens.

植物は、暗闇のなかで生き生きとしている。

夜の街路樹のそばに立ち、8×10カメラのシャッターを数分間開き続ける。目では捉えられないもの──空気、時間、震え、エネルギー──が、フィルムの上で初めて姿をあらわす。葉は揺れ、歪み、形を変えながら、途切れることのない生命力を示しつづける。

撮影のプロセスは、植物の根源的な営みをあらわにする。

光によって水を分解し、熱と二酸化炭素から糖をつくりだす光合成。

葉に光が触れた瞬間、目に見えない反応が起きる。

フィルムに光が触れると、そこでまた別の反応が起こる。

潜像が生まれ、熱と薬品によって可視像へと変換される。

写真とは、もうひとつの光合成である。

暗い空間に光が入り、感光面と出会い、像が生成される──

そこに刻まれるのは、生命そのものだ。

月明かりや街灯、ネオンの光のもとでつくられたこれらの写真は、単なる都市の夜景ではない。

それは、木々の生命力がフィルムへと転写される瞬間の記録である。

眠らない都市のなかで、植物は静かな儀式を続けている。

写真はただ、その声に耳を澄ます。
