 Les cinq murs

ある日、海に向かって一直線に伸びる細い突堤を歩いた。先へ進むにつれて、ビューファインダーのなかの光景は震え、露出は激しく変動し、焦点を失った像は次々と姿を変えていった。

そのとき記された写真は、目の前にあった光景をそのまま示すものではなかった。三次元の経験が二次元へと移されることで、そこには別の広がりが現れた。それは、一枚の壁のようにも見えた。

そこで、五つの壁をつくることにした。

壁は視線を遮る。しかし、見えなくなることで、別の何かが現れることもある。

私たちは壁を前にして、何を見るのだろう。そこに現れたものを、もう一度塗り固めていく。

Les cinq murs

One day, I walked along a narrow jetty extending straight out into the sea. As I moved farther along it, the scene in the viewfinder trembled, the exposure fluctuated wildly, and the out-of-focus images continually changed their form.

The photographs made during that experience did not simply show the scene before me. As a three-dimensional experience was transferred into two dimensions, another kind of expanse emerged. It seemed to me like a wall.

So I decided to create five walls.

A wall obstructs the gaze. Yet when something can no longer be seen, something else may appear.

What do we see when faced with a wall? I then plaster over once more whatever has appeared there.
